Lilongwe Technical College was established in 1963 with the overall goal of training and supplying craftsmen and women to meet the never-ending industrial demands. Three courses were offered in the early days, which included carpentry and joinery,Bricklaying and plumbing. However, the college experienced expansion between 1968 and 1983 during which Motor Vehicle Mechanics, General Fitting, Electrical Installation, Welding and Fabrication, Vehicle Body Repair and Refinishing, Machine Woodwork, Secretarial Studies and Accounting were introduced. The same period Carpentry and Joinery, and Bricklaying, moved to Namitete Technical College.

Lilonwe Technical College is the biggest of all the public technical colleges, with a boarding capacity of 360 students. And it trains young men and women in eighteen different courses. The college is headed by a principal. It has a Management Team, which comprises five heads of department, Principal and the Deputy Principal.

History
Lilongwe Technical College (LTC) was established on 25 July 1963. The college has experienced several changes. Started as a Trade School under the Ministry of Labour then went to Ministry of Education. In 1999 it changed again to Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training and in 2006 it changed hands again to Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. Lilongwe Technical College has both local and foreign teachers. The college has a teacher from Japan. The majority of local teachers at this college in all departments have been trained abroad such as United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, Poland, Taiwan, Australia, Mauritius, South Africa and India.
