The broad aim of two accounting programme as to prepare and equip students with adequate knowledge, skills, and understanding of the financial and business environment as well as sufficiently develop power of reasoning, analysis and expression to be able to work in commercial, non governmental organisation as well as government organisation.
Under The Public Accountants Examination Council of Malawi (PAEC) the course is divided into two levels.
Certificate In Financial Accounting
This level has a duration of one year and the entry qualification is the Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE). This program is both residential and non residential.Â Candidates proceed to the next level; Diploma in Accounting after successfully finishing the certificate level.
Diploma In Accounting
There are twelve subjects with exemption for financial accounting I and communication to those who held PAEC certificate. The course is run in three circles:
Business Maths & Statistics
Cost and Budgetary Control
Each circle runs for six months and students are supposed to learn the subjects in the circles in the order given here. However, special arrangements can be made for those who want to choose subjects from diferent circles. For serious students they can get a diploma in 18 months.
As a way of improving the quality of graduates in this program, the department ensures that each student is attached to an organisation after finishing Certificate In Financial Accounting (CIFA) and then permanent job after getting the diploma.
